A. Overview
If you visit Surakarta, also known as Solo, you must not miss the delicious Liwet rice, a special cuisine from Solo. Liwet Rice is a cuisine made from white rice which is cooked to proper softness and served with various vegetables and side dished, such as Siamese pumpkin soup, shredded sweet chicken meat, and braised egg. Liwet Rice is also delicious if served along with krupuk rambak (chips made from slices of cow/buffalo hide).
The cuisine is well-known to surrounding cities, such as Yogyakarta, Klaten, Boyolali. Liwet Rice is also popular in Jakarta, Bandung, and Surabaya. Many restaurants in those cities made this cuisine as one of their main menu.
B. Features
Liwet Rice is well-known for its soft texture and delicious taste. This delicious taste comes from the process of cooking the rice, that is by “dikaru” or mixed with coconut milk. Liwet Rice becomes more delicious if served along with vegetables and another side dished.
Another unique feature of this cuisine is the banana leaf lining and banana leaf spoon (suru). People believe that banana leaf makes this cuisine taste more delicious. This is because banana leaf is natural and free from contamination of chemical elements.
In addition to the delicious taste, this cuisine is also safe to be consumed by people with high cholesterol, because this cuisine does not contain grease and other substance bad for health. Last but not least, this cuisine is cheap, easy to get, and satisfying.
C. Location
To get Liwet Rice, visitors can go to Surakarta, Central Java. There are many sellers of this cuisine around the city. Moreover, there are some sellers of Liwet Rice at the east side of Klewer Market in the morning.
D. Price
You can get Liwet Rice only for Rp 5.000,00 - Rp 7.500,00 per portion, complete with its various dishes, and krupuk rambak. Moreover, you will get a glass of water for free. Nevertheless, if you buy this cuisine in restaurants, do not be surprised if the price can be up to tens until hundreds of thousand rupiahs (Januari 2009).
