A. Overview
Hearing the name Wonosobo, people would likely be drawn to a thought of ongklok noodle or Dieng Plateau. But the fact is that besides two aforementioned specialties, the area also has another, a tea plantation known as Agrowisata Tambi. Agrowisata Tambi is good choice for those who want to get rid of the urban busy life by enjoying the natural atmosphere of mountain environment.
Agrowisata Tambi is an area of tea plantation as wide as 829.14 acres managed by PT Tambi, a company work in the field of tea plantation and production. It used to be a Dutch-owned company and called Bagelen Thee & Kina Maatschappij managed by NV John Peet with headquarter in Batavia (now Jakarta). After Indonesia gained independence, the company was taken over by the government of the Republic of Indonesia. Yet, ahead of Meja Bundar Conference in 1949, the estate was handed back to the original owner. Then in 1954, it was sold to a state corporation formerly known as Sindoro Sumbing. Then in 1957, the state corporation in cooperation with the regional government of Wonosobo set up a new company named NV Tambi, which was later changed to PT Tambi (www.agris-tambi.com).
B. Features
This place has indeed been long projected to be a tourism resort. The primary activity you should do here is the tea walk, which is walking around the plantation. There are three routes, including the short one (1-2 km), medium (2-3 km) and the long one (3-9 km). Here you can really have a relaxation after stressing daily routines back home. The green fields, soft breeze, and cool air will help you refresh your mind. You may also come across some tea pickers doing their job there. They are warm people.
Not satisfied with only a walk, you can take the package tour offered by the management. The package allows you lesson of how to know and pick good tea leaves from the plants. There are methods in it and if you do it wrong, the tea you pick will likely taste differently.
There is also the factory tour, in which tourists are taken to see the process of black tea production on location, starting from picking the leaves, production, until it is served as a cup of hot tea you can have in the gazebo.
Besides, this place also offers a rafting tour in Serayu River which will spur on your adrenaline. There are professional guides and trainers so no need to worry for first-timers. Or you can also play flying fox since there is an outbound arena as well in this area.
C. Location
Tambi Tea Plantation is 16 km north of Wonosobo, precisely in Tambi Village, Kejajar District, Wonosobo Regency, Central Java.
D. Access
Situated in the highway of Wonosobo-Dieng, the tea-planting area is very easy to reach. Tourists can start from Wonosobo. To get to Wonosobo, there are two routes that can be taken. For those departing from east, it is through Temanggung. Along the way in this route, you can see the natural panorama of Mount Sindoro Sumbing and Kledung Pass. If coming from the south, you can go through Banjarnegara, whose scenery is just as beautiful. There are rice fields and Serayu streams along the way.
Using your own vehicle, it takes approximately 20 minutes from Wonosobo and a little bit longer if you go by public transportation. You can take a minibus heading for Dieng, get off at Tambi Village, then continue your trip on foot to the plantation, which is approximately 200 m from the road.
E. Ticket
In order to take the tour, you should come in group and each person gets charged Rp 20,000 and an additional Rp 20,000 for lunch. To take the outbound tour, each person will have to pay Rp 85,000 with minimum 20 persons enlisted (July 2008).
F. Accommodations and Facilities
Agrowisata Tambi, like other tourism resorts, is fitted out with supporting facilities. Among the facilities are restaurant, souvenir shops, security service, outbound arena, camping ground, tennis court, fishing pond, and playing ground.
If tourists want to experience the night life in the plantation, there are guesthouses available for them. There are 23 guesthouses, each has 2 beds. Moreover, there is a meeting hall available for various purposes.
