A. Overview
Kulon Progo Regency has various tourism objects, one of which is pitaya orchard. If you go to Glagah Beach, you will find the orchard along the beach. The orchard called “Kusuma Wanadri” has been managed by Romo Dr. Paulus Tribarta Budiharjo, M.Th., M.M. since 2003.
Initially, the land of Glagah Beach is an empty land of 2.5 acres. After given permission by the local government of Kulon Progo, Romo Paulus Tribata developed the potential of the orchard to be the pitaya orchard. Besides, such a tourism orchard also offers processed products of the fruit, like syrup and jam.
In the orchard, two varieties of pitaya are bred, namely Hylocereus undatus whose peel is red and whose content is white, and Hylocereus polyrhizus whose peel is pink and whose content is red.
The marketing of the fruits is mostly to Jakarta, especially to the big supermarkets.
The supply of the red ones is still high; as for the white ones, it is rather difficult for the price competes with that of the imported ones which is relatively lower. The white ones are only planted 20% out of all the fruits.
B. Features
After enjoying the beauty of Glagah Beach, you can visit the pitaya orchardthat lies along the beach. Besides the fresh taste, the fruit is also useful to increase the stamina, decrease the viscosity, cholesterol, triglyceride, sharpen the sight, etc.
C. Location
The Pitaya Orchard of Kusuma Wanadri is situated in the area of Glagah Beach, Temon District, Kulon Progo Regency. It is about 40 kilometers to the southwest from Yogyakarta City or 15 kilometers from Wates.
D. Access
From Yogyakarta, the location can be reached by any kind of transportation through Wates. From Wates, you go south about 15 kilometers. If you go by your own vehicle, it is easier to enter the area of Glagah Beach as well as the pitaya orchard.
E. Price
Before entering the area of Glagah Beach, you are charged for the admission to the tourism object in the TPR post. The charge for motorcycle is Rp 1,000, for car Rp. 3000, and for bus Rp, 5,000. It does not yet include the admission charge per person which is Rp 3,000 (in 2010).
To taste the fruit of pitaya, you must enter the Orchard by paying Rp 1,000 and you then you pick the fruit and weigh it. A kilogram is priced variously. The big and maroon one costs Rp 15,000 – Rp 30,000. As for the relatively small one is Rp 10,000 – Rp 15,000.
The orchard is an alternative destination on holidays. If you care for the seed of the fruit, the price is Rp 35,000.
The parking retribution varies. For motorcycle, it is Rp 2000, for car Rp 5,000, bus or truck Rp 10,000.
