A.  Overview

Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Yogyakarta or more famous as ISI JOGJA is one of the state art educational settings which are categorized as full university. ISI holds up to the highest level of education and it is the biggest and best art university in Indonesia.

ISI Yogyakarta is one of the four state universities in Yogyakarta, where the other three are Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University of Yogyakarta, Gadjah Mada University, and State University of Yogyakarta. ISI is under the Private Higher Education Coordinator (Kopertis) Zone V of Special Region of Yogyakarta together with the other 59 private universities.

Yogyakarta, a city of culture and education, has already had Taman Budaya (Yogyakarta Cultural Center), Vocational High School of Art, Art Teacher’s Development and Training Center (PPPG), and art workshops spread all over the city. Thus, ISI Yogyakarta does not only benefit from this fruitful art and cultural environment, but also can perform better role in building and developing the art life in Indonesia.

ISI Yogyakarta was founded by merging several higher educational settings and academies of art previously run by Gadjah Mada University (UGM) and Yogyakarta State University (UNY). Some of them were:

  • Indonesian Academy of Fine Art (ASRI) is the oldest component of ISI. ASRI was established in the early 1950 on the initiative of Yogyakarta artists. Indonesia has a high sense of art as well as the ability to preserve and develop it. ASRI was an academy back then, but in 1968 it turned into a college.
  • Indonesian Academy of Music (AMI) is another component of ISI. AMI was born in 1961, it developed from Indonesian School of Music (SMIND) which was established in 1952.
  • Indonesian Academy of Dance (ASTI) which was born in 1963. ASTI was a continuant of Indonesian Conservatory of Dance (KONRI) which was born much earlier in 1961.

Similar to ASRI, AMI and ASTI were established on the initiative of Indonesian culture activists aiming at developing their potentials. Long time before their establishment, traditional art education had existed. The need for promoting it either vertically or horizontally became the main reason of the establishment of formal and modern art educational settings.

In the early 1973, a congress of leaders of ASRI, AMI, ASTI and several academies of art with the officials of the Department of Education and Culture agreed to form an art educational setting with wider scope and larger competence in art and other higher educational provisions.

Under the agreement was then ISI Yogyakarta established based on the Decree No: 39/1984 dated May 30th 1984. It was inaugurated by the Minister of Education and Culture Prof.Dr. Nugroho Notosusanto on July 23rd 1984.
