A. Overview
Kulonprogo Regency may not have too many special foods but there are indeed some delicacies, especially those of coastal area. One of them is peyek undur-undur (literally, ant lion crackers). This food is only sold in areas around Glagah beach so that it is probably not yet so easy for people to find it.
Many people are still unfamiliar with peyek undur-undur. As the name suggests, the food is made of coastal ant lion, which the Javanese usually call undur-undur laut. The ant lions are acquired from Glagah Beach by the local fishermen. They will then sell it for Rp 6,000 per kilogram.
Coastal ant lions are a crustacean kind of animals. They belong to the class of hexapod and is as big as thumb. They have a solid crust like crab. Their flesh taste piquant, a little rubbery, and is reddish white such as that of shrimps or crabs.
Peyek undur-undur is made of various things including rice flour, starch, coconut milk, onion, candlenut, coriander, salt, galingale, and lemon leaf. The lemon leaf is used to remove the fishy smell of ant lions. The ant lions, also known as yutuk, are cleaned up and bowled. After that, they are taken out of the water, put into dough and mixed with the spices, and finally fried. Peyek undur-undur is usually served on a plate or wrapped in a plastic bag.
B. Features
Besides being processed into crackers, ant lions—whose texture and taste are like melinjo peels (a kind of edible seeds), can also be fried without any dough or spices. It can be fried like cashew or ground nut.
This coastal food is also good for health. It can help lower blood sugar and cure or prevent some illnesses such as diabetes and stroke. It contains omega-3 fatty acid that can increase the amount of insulin in the body so that the amount blood sugar will decrease. As for the taste, it is piquant, crunchy, and appetizing to say the least.
Research has shown that ant lions contain quite high total fat, i.e. around 17.22 – 22.56 percent. The total amount of omega-3 (EPA and DHA) is also high, ranging about 7.75 to 14.48 percent, compared to other crustaceans like shrimp, lobster, and crab. In more details, the EPA (6.41 – 8.43 percent) is higher than the DPA (1.34 – 6.57 percent).
C. Location
Peyek undur-undur can be found in the coastal areas especially in Kulonprogo, i.e. Glagah Beach, and Bantul, i.e. Parangkusumo and Parangtritis Beaches. There are usually hawkers selling the food on the beaches.
D. Access
To get to the location will not be difficult. The road is mostly flat and there are not too many hikes along the way. You would get there comfortably by either private or public transportation through Wates Street.
E. Price
Peyek undur-undur is usually sold in a plastic bag each at Rp 5,000. In a bag, there are five pieces of crackers.
