A. Overview
Code is one among many rivers that flow through Yogyakarta city. Since the 90s, this river has been widely talked at local, national, and international level because its history and activity that color its story. Yogyakarta people believe that Code River has its spring at the slope of Merapi Volcano. Therefore, for those whose neighborhood is passed through by Code stream, the water really means something. In Sleman, people irrigate their rice farms using water from the river while in Bantul, they even drink the water.
Code River has also been used to channel the cold lava coming out from Merapi eruption, in case it overflows up to Yogyakarta. To anticipate that as well as to avoid abrasion, as of recently the government of Yogyakarta built walls at the sides of the river and rubbed down the bed.
In 1970s, it was impossible to use Code River for any purposes because it was fulfilled with household litter. This moved a cultured man, Y.B. Mangunwijaya or better known as Romo Mangun (Father Mangun), to clean up the river and the banks, make it beautiful and pleasant. The first step he took was approaching the people living at the river banks and making them understand that they should not litter.
Romo Mangun even moved in to the river bank to provide example for the people as to how to keep the river. Consequently, Code became clean and beautiful. It has even become a natural tourist destination in the city which helps build up the people cultural and economical life. Since then, there are many tourists, local, national, or international, come to areas in the river banks to enjoy the river. After Romo Mangun passed away, the efforts of Code people development are taken up by social activists under Pondok Rakyat Foundation. The foundation is also active in building model kampongs like Badran, Tungkak, Kricak, and Sidomulyo, which share the similar condition with kampongs at Code banks.
Accordingly, Yogyakarta Municipal Government takes part no less actively in giving supports for the Code people and related parties to keep the river. Nowadays, Code riverbanks have become an interesting and beautiful natural tourism spots in some ways. People living at the banks, from the north end to south end being united in the group Pemerti Code are all spirited to keep the river clean through the program “Nol Sampah di Kali Code 2010”.
