A. Overview

Hargodumilah, or known as Bukit Bintang (Starry Hill), is an uphill tourism area situated around 20 km away to the east of Yogyakarta City. Physically, the area is not very large and only a side road on the hillside. When you pass by the area, you will be mesmerized by various natural views that are so incredible. You will watch over the length and breadth of Yogyakarta City, the magnificence of mountains from afar, as well as the beauty of the sunset.

Initially, Hargodumilah area was just a place to stop by for the riders and drivers who wanted to take a rest while enjoying the scenery and inhaling the hill air. Through time, more riders and drivers stopped by the area, especially in the morning and in the twilight. Such a condition then was noticed by the local government. In 2007, the side road all the way through the hillside was broadened 5 meters and a rail of wall was built. Now, Hargodumilah becomes a bustling tourism object and is comfortable to visit.

The local people are also responsive knowing the potentials of the area by building stalls to enliven Hargodumilah. There are tens of food stalls to please the visitors so that they will stay long sitting around and enjoying the scenery line along the side road of the hillside. From dusk to evening, the area is visited by many tourists, domestic or foreign, to watch the beauty of Yogyakarta City from above. Hargodumilah is most crowded on Saturday nights and on New Year’s Eves.

B. Features

Hargodumilah is one of the alternative tourism objects you can choose to ease away your weariness after doing the routines all day. From the area, you can watch various natural views that are very fascinating and breathe in the fresh air of the hill. If you visit or stop by the area in a bright sunny morning, you will see the views of Mounts Merapi, Merbabu, Sindoro, and Sumbing stand tall showing off their charms from afar. Waiting for the sunset above Yogyakarta City in the afternoon is an experience that is too good to miss. As soon as the sun goes down, you will feel as if you were in heaven when watching the twinkling lights of Yogyakarta City.

Another feature of Hargodumilah is that there are a number of food stalls serving various menus, such as instant noodles, ice coconut, roast corn, meatball, and soto (a kind of soup). Not only the prices of the menus are affordable, but also the stalls can be a strategic point to enable the visitors to relax without being awkward. They were deliberately designed to face the open nature so that the visitors can watch various views while sitting and enjoying the foods and beverages served. For those who care to enjoy the scenery in a more luxurious atmosphere, there is also a restaurant with rooms to stay. In the restaurant, you can sit quietly in a soft chair with a table of marble while enjoying the delicious food and the view of Yogyakarta City.

Moreover, Hargodumilah can be the choice for you with family, friends, or a date as an alternative place to bide the New Year. From the area, you will be amazed by the colors of the fireworks adorning the skies of Yogyakarta that fuse with their thunders in the air and the noise of the trumpets. On such a celebration, not only you watch the beautiful colors of the fireworks, but also the various shapes of them which look like a flower, a fountain, a comet, a star of a galaxy, or a planet.

C. Location

Hargodumilah belongs in the territory of Srimulyo Village, Piyungan District, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

D. Access

Hargodumilah is about 20 kilometers far to the east of Yogyakarta and roughly 700 meters before GCD FM Radio Station in Patuk, or precisely before the Pillar of Border between Bantul and Gunung Kidul. The location can be accessed by public or personal transportation. From Yogyakarta, take a bus for Wonosari at Giwangan Bus Station or on the intersection of East Ring Road. The bus takes you through the highway of Jogja-Wonosari to Piyungan T-junction then goes up straight and turns in Bokong Semar. Hargodumilah is about 1 km from Bokong Semar.

If you go by personal vehicle and you have never been through the way before, it is suggested that you be very careful because the roads are steep and winding here and there, especially from the Piyungan T-junction up to the location. You better not carelessly overtake other vehicles and must turn the light on. Last but not least, you must keep your distance from the vehicle before you, especially bus and truck, because it possibly retreats and runs over you.

E. Ticket

If you care to enjoy the view and the cool air of Hargodumilah Hill, you do not have to pay anything but the parking that costs Rp 2,000.

F. Accommodations and Other Facilities

The accommodations and facilities available around the area of Hargodumilah include food stalls, restaurants, public convenience, and a large parking lot. There are also lodgings for those who would like to stay.
