A. Overview
Museum is a source of knowledge that is fun and seriously important at the same time for everyone, although it is only about wood. This notion is the basis for the Wood Museum of Wanagama which was founded in 1995. As it name suggests, the museum lies in the area of Wanagama Educational Forest, Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta.
The history records that the museum was the brainchild of two Gadjah Mada University professors, namely Prof. Dr. Ir. Hj. Oemi Hani’in Soeseno and Ir. Etty Suliantoro Sulaiman. The duo then cooperated with Perum Perhutani (Indonesian Forestry Public Corporation) to build the museum after attending the Anthropology Museum Exhibition in France and the establishment of Jati Centre in Cepu, Central Java. The museum was inaugurated on August 8th 1998 by the Governor of the Special Province of Yogyakarta, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X and the Indonesian Minister of Forestry, Ir. Muslimin Nasution.
The museum consists of two 1880-made wooden buildings which were gifts from Perum Perhutani. The buildings were later renovated to become rumah panggung (house built on stilts). Nowadays, the Wood Museum of Wanagama cares for various items made of wood, such as the old desk of a district head from Jepara, Gupolo Figure from yellow mimosa wood, table and chairs of former Indonesian Minister of Forestry Ir. Sudjarwo, Jepara-style carved wooden wall (gebyok), fossils of hundreds-of-years-old hardwood, and various wooden handicrafts from different places across Indonesia. Besides, there are also very old wooden equipment.
B. Features
The location of the Wood Museum of Wanagama is a feature in itself. And if you are interested to know more about wood, the museum has plenty of knowledge at your disposal. Making indoor museum and natural museum (as it lies in a forest area) in a single complex is a genius concept. Here, you can see both the log and wooden products.
C. Location
The Wood Museum of Wanagama is located in the area of Wanagama Forest, Bunder Village, Playen District, Gunungkidul Regency. It is at the 30th kilometer of the Jogja-Wonosari Road, from Yogyakarta.
D. Access
It is by no means hard to get to the museum, either by private or public transportation. Using public transportation, from Giwangan Bus Station in Yogyakarta, you will have to take a bus heading for Wonosari and get off at Gading Village. Then at the Gading T-intersection, take the right road. Wanagama is not far away from there.
F. Accommodations and Other Facilities
In the museum complex, there is a pavilion which is often used for holding events and as a resting place for visitors. There is a camping ground as well while standard supporting facilities such as clean water, electricity, and security guards are also available.
