A. Overview
Bunder Rest Area is a stopover for resting in Bunder Wanagama Forest, Gunungkidul. The primary idea of the construction was to provide a resting place for tourists from or to Gunungkidul, considering its long distance from Yogyakarta City. Indeed, people like to go to Gunungkidul for there are appealing tourism resorts, such as the shoreline that stretches up to 70 km long east to west in the southernmost part of the regency.
The roads to the beaches are windy and must be tiring. For that reason, in 2001, the government through the Tourism and Cultural Agency of Gunungkidul provided the tourists with the rest area. It is situated in the halfway point of Yogyakarta-Wonosari main road.
Although administratively sitting in Gading Village area, the place uses the name “Bunder”, a village that borders with Gading, separated by Oya River. One of the reasons is because the rest are is closer to the people’s residence of Bunder Village than of Gading.
B. Features
The rest area is surrounded by cajuput trees that it would make a good place for camping and outbound activities. Many schools often hold a camping activity in the area. Besides, there is also Oya River, which adds freshness to the shady place. The local Tourism Agency is currently developing a spot at the riverbank for fishing place.
Not only is there a resting place, there are other interesting things around the rest area such as cajuput oil production, natural silk production, deer preservation, and Sendang Mole Lake. The tourism objects integrated in the rest area are under the management of Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta. Since becoming Taman Hutan Raya (Protected Forest) by the issuance of Minister of Forestry’s Decree code: SK.353/Menhut-II/2004 dated 28 September 2004, the forest has been used for research, educational and cultural activities, and also recreational purposes.
In this area, you can feel the fresh air, the typical therapeutical aroma of cajuput, and also entertaining chirps of sooty-headed bulbuls, grey parakeets, fulvous-breasted woodpeckers, jungle fowls, white-bellied swiftlets, and other birds. The 617 acres Bunder Forest Area are dominated with cajuput, mahogany, yellow mimosa, and various agro-forestry plants such as cashew and non-staple food crops. Besides, there are also many animals such as porcupine, python, and monitor lizard. And not far from the rest area, 1.5 km away, there is a conservative area of Timor deer as wide as 6 acres. You can see the deer and even feed them.
While you are in the place, you can have the hot noodle and reddish rice (sego abang) with green chili broth (sayur lombok ijo) which is the special food of Gunungkidul in nearby food stalls.
C. Location
Bunder Rest Area is situated in Gading Village, Playen District, Gunungkidul Regency, Special Province of Yogyakarta.
D. Access
It is easy to reach the place because it sits right at the side of Yogyakarta-Wonosari main road, exactly at the 30th km from Yogyakarta or 10th km from Wonosari City. You can use public or private transportation. Taking a bus from Giwangan Bus Station, Yogyakarta, or from East Ring Road intersection will cost only Rp 5,000 (2010).
E. Ticket
Bunder Rest Area does not apply any admission charges. However, to use the pavilion for meeting or wedding, there is a rent of Rp 150,000 a day. The tariff applies for any kind of purposes. To rent the pavilion, you can call or come at the office of the rest area management or the Tourism and Cultural Agency of Gunungkidul on Brigjend. F. Accommodations and Other Facilities
In the middle of the area is the wide parking lot. It is surrounded by the pavilion in the east, playing ground in the north, and public convenience and small mosque in the south. There are also food stalls here and there offering tasty food. Electricity and clean water are available.
