A. Overview

As a social and religious movement, Muhammadiyah is the realization of KH Ahmad Dahlan’s idea, established in Yogyakarta, 1912. The organization has three modern characteristics: the organized movement, the modern educational system, and the technological approach to support the activities of the organization. The technological approach means the accuracy to read the social reality and to recognize the challenges in the present and in the future time. With the technological approach, the organization from the beginning pays much attention to the development of human resources.

Such a concern to the development of human resources encouraged the activists of the organization to establish a university in the motherland of Muhammadiyah, Yogyakarta. The idea had come so long in Prof. Dr. Kahar Muzakkir’s mind. In many occasions he conveyed his idea about the need to found the University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. When the Teaching Committee of Muhammadiyah made official of the Teacher Training Faculty on 18 November 1960 in Yogyakarta, the establishment charter explicitly stated that the faculty was a part of the University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta.

But it was not until March 1981 that because of the hard works of the activists of Muhammadiyah, including Drs. Mustafa Kamal Pasha, Drs. M. Alfian Darmawan, Hoemam Zainal, SH, Brigadier General Drs. H. Bakri Syahid, K.H. Ahmad Azhar Basyir, M.A., Ir. H.M. Dasron Hamid, M.Sc, H.M. Daim Saleh, Dr. M. Amien Rais, M.A., H.Mh. Mawardi, Drs. H. Hasan Basri, Drs. H. Abdul Rosyad Sholeh, H. Zubeir Kohar, Ir. H. A. Basit Wahid, supported by the Chief Head of Muhammadiyah at that time, K.H.A.R. Fakhruddin and the Regional Head of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, H.M. Muchlas Abror, the University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta was officially founded and keeps developing up until present.

Now UMY has seven faculties. They are Islam Faculty, Economics Faculty, Law Faculty, Social and Politics Faculty, Medicines Faculty, Agriculture Faculty, and Techniques Faculty.

B. Features

To increase the quality of the human resources is the main priority in the development of UMY. That is why every year UMY supports about 30 lecturers to continue their studies in master and doctoral degree. Some of them are the graduates of UGM, UNY, Sanata Darma, UPI Bandung, IIUM Malaysia, Flinders University of South Australia, University of South Australia, and Edith Cowan University.

Apart from the academic activities, the students still do the activities to improve their potentials. Various student activity units (UKM) are provided in UMY. Students may join which aligns their hobbies and interests.

Following is the list of the UKMs available in UMY:

1. Sports: Tae Kwon Do, basketball, Inkai, karate, soccer, Tapak Suci, badminton, natural adventure, futsal, and table tennis.

2. Arts: music, choir, theater, drum band, photography, multimedia cine club, karawitan.

3. Self educations: KPM (student group of researchers), LPPM Nuansa (student press), SEA (Student English Activity), Kopma (student cooperative), IMM (student institute of Muhammadiyah), Menwa (student regiment), scout, Arabic study centre, and red cross.

Now UMY also provides various fellowships, including general fellowship, fellowship for the outstanding students, fellowship for the students with special achievements, Supersemar Fellowship, BBM Fellowship, PPA Fellowship, and fellowship from the Education and Culture Service of Yogyakarta.

C. Location

The University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta is on South Ring Road, Kasihan District, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta.

D. Access

To reach the location of the campus, you can use the ring road track which surrounds Yogyakarta City. From any direction, you just go ahead to the ring road and stop right in UMY (on the South Ring Road). The track is accessible with any kind of transportation. The public bus passing through UMY is number 15.

E. Ticket

There is no ticket to visit the University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta.

F. Accommodations and Other Facilities

In the twentieth century, the civilization watches the emergence of new era often called as the era of knowledge economic. In such an era, knowledge becomes the vital asset in building competitive eminence for individuals, organizations, and people in general.

To cope with the challenge, the University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta provides various some facilities, as follows:

1. The UMY Library. The library is already supported with the Knowledge Learning Center (KLC) of which motto is ‘we bring knowledge closer to you’. KLC becomes the front line to supply the sources of information. Now KLC of UMY has various collections of information, such as:

  • Online journal database from proquest and ebsc.
  • Online Mass Media Knowledge Management of 45 local and international media, containing 18,000 titles of 4 fields: economics, business, politics, human rights, and law.
  • 20,000 titles of books of 60,000 exemplars, local, international, and the collections of Muhammadiyah written by the Muhammadiyah intellectuals in the Muhammadiyah Information Center.

2. The Language Training Center. The Language Training Center (PPB) is a supporting unit in UMY. PPB accounts for the development of language skills for the students and the graduates of UMY. In order to reach the goal, PPB designs some quality language programs. The teachers are the graduates of national and international universities. PPB not only focuses on English language, but also other languages, such as Mandarin, Japanese, and Arabic.

3. The programs offered by PPB are English for Academic Purposes, English for Public Speaking, English for Paper Writing, English for Job Hunting, and TOEFL Preparation. Aside from the programs, PPB also has some language services, like TOEFL-like test, Institutional TOEFL test, translation service, private language course, and in-house training.

4. The classes only consist of about 20 students in order that the learning process is more effective. Using the student centered learning method, the activities aim at giving the best results in language study. Equipped with a multimedia classroom, and supported with modern laboratories of language and computer, students will get a big chance to increase their language skills. They can also increase their language skills by visiting Self Access Center where they can use the books, cassettes, and other learning sources published by distinguished international publishers.

5. In addition, students in PPB can also get benefits of being taught by native speakers that are the results of the cooperation with a national and international institutes like Lembaga Dakwah dan Taklim Jakarta, Australian Volunteers International, Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission Republic of China, and Singapore International Foundation.

6. UMY First!, standing for UMY Free Internet Hot Spot, is a facility for the students of UMY who need internet access in college. Every student is free to use the facility anywhere and anytime. Such a facility of course makes it easier for the students to dig their learning sources from virtual world.

7. E-Learning. The development of information technology nowadays encourages UMY to develop IT-based studies through electronic-learning (E-Learning). Using the MOODLE system, a system of online learning but the interactions between the lecturers and the students can take place anytime and anywhere. The effectiveness of learning process also improves by means of E-Learning because the students can access the materials, do the assignments, and even discuss with the lecturers and fellow students.

The University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta provides various accommodations for the students, including:

1. Policlinic. Health plays an important role in learning process. To give the security of its residents in doing their activities, UMY provides a general and dental policlinic that is open every day inside the college. Students, lecturers, and employees of UMY can check up the health of their bodies and teeth there and receive the medicines without any charge.

2. Muhammadiyah Health Fund (DSM). Cooperating with the DSM, UMY gives health guarantee for the students. DSM provides some medical services, such as advanced treatments, Intensive Care Unit, etc.

3. University Residence (Unires). Unires of UMY is a boarding school for the students of UMY. The location is near the campus.

4. Self-Development Centre. It is a unit that functions to serve the students in terms of psychological health.
