The most likely situation you would find in Sadeng Beach sometime before dawn is women getting ready to pack their fisherman husbands’ catch. They would look very busy dividing the fishes according to their types and carrying them to the auction market.
Sadeng Auction Market used to be a harbor with only few merchants. But as it was changed into an auction market, back in 1986, the place has developed to be very functional, especially for the fishermen to earn a living. The number of merchants increases and accordingly so is the number of buyers, reaching hundreds of people coming from different places. They are mostly domestic buyers, fishmongers, and also fish-related business owners. Sadeng Auction Market is a national-level fish-harbor and has been an instrumental facility for Yogyakarta fishery.
Sadeng Auction Market is open at 4 in the morning coinciding with the landing of the fishermen from the sea. They set ashore carrying tons of catches which consist of various kinds of fishes, shrimps, shells, small crabs, and green crabs. Later on in 90s, the auction market underwent a renovation funded by the regional government. It was meant to make the market a spot of sea products shopping tourism. It cost 600 million rupiahs for the merchant kiosks, management office, and other facilities.
Since then, the auction market has become more organized and cleaner and therefore, more comfortable for both merchants and buyers. In accordance, the sea products sold in there have been more varied. Now, they have jumbo crabs, lobsters, catfishes, samangati fishes, scabbard ribbon fishes, chub mackerels, tunas, sharks, and white pomfrets.
B. Features
One of the specialties of Sadeng Fish Auction Market is the price. The fishes here are sold at low prices. And despite depending on the kind, the fishes are affordable at any rate. Shrimps, for example, are sold at Rp 40,000 per kilogram. As for sharks, small sharks, and squids, they are sold at Rp 20,000; Rp 15,000; and Rp 30,000 per kilogram respectively.
If you want your fishes cooked, there is a service for that around the market. You just pick up the fishes you want and tell them your preference, fried or roasted. This cooking service costs Rp 7,000 per kilogram and you will soon be able to enjoy your seafood while relaxing at the shore of Sadeng.
C. Location
Sadeng Fish Auction Market is situated in Gunungkidul Regency, precisely 40 km away from the capital, Wonosari. Administratively, the place lies in both Songbanyu Village and Pucung Village, Girisubo District.
D. Access
The trip to Sadeng Fish Auction Market is quite easy to go through, either by motorcycle or by bus. There are road signs along the way so it should not be so difficult for new visitors. The most common route from Wonosari is through Semanu—Rongkop—Girisubo—Sadeng Beach. Along the route, you will be presented views of karsts. You need to be careful, however, as the road is windy and steep at some points. The hardest part of the road is right at the outside of Girisubo District.

There is no ticket to get into the auction market.
F. Accommodation and Other Facilities
There are quite enough facilities around Sadeng Fish Auction Market. There are food stalls and restaurants serving delicious various seafood menus at quite affordable prices, about Rp 15,000 per portion. There are fishes, shrimps, crabs, squids, or even shark fins in the list of menu.
