Every Wage day, one of the days in Javanese calendar, Kenteng Market located in the Kembang Village, Nanggulan District, Kulon Progo Regency, is always crowded. Very early in the morning, merchants and shoppers already begin the activities. The people of Kembang Village and its surroundings depend on the market to meet their daily needs.
To survive in the competition of modern life, traditional markets, including Kenteng Market, improve and maintain themselves so that the image of dirty that is generally associated with them fades aligning with the betterment of the cleanness. Such an improvement is also carried out by establishing more facilities. That is the realization of the local government to increase the economy of the middle class people.
Despite the emergence of plentiful supermarkets and malls, the traditional market remains irreplaceable. There are some aspects that the traditional market has but the modern one does not. So the role of the Kenteng Market is still significant despite many shops around it.
The inability of modern market to replace the role of traditional market is in terms of meeting the primary needs. There are some goods unavailable in the modern market, for instance farm utilities. It makes possible for the traditional market to survive among the modern one.
B. Features
Traditional markets have some features in general compared to the modern ones. So does the Kenteng Market. The intensive interaction between the sellers and the buyers through bargaining strengthens their relationship. In addition, usually the sellers and the buyers already know each other. Such a good relationship is very rarely found in the modern markets.
Furthermore, the interaction between the sellers and the buyers can increase the social relationship between them. The warmth of the merchants that is earnest is the special characteristic of the market. Such warmth roots in the ancient wisdom that villagers give priority to their harmony. The harmonious atmosphere of villagers is still strongly felt in Kenteng Market.
Kenteng Market has 24 stalls. The merchants are commonly the inhabitants of Kembang Village and its surroundings. They offer various goods, including rice, clothes, vegetables, farm utilities, fruits, and so on. There are also blacksmiths who usually make sickles, hoes, and other iron stuffs. There is even an animal market, though not so big. The market sells goats and various birds.
C. Location
The Kenteng Traditional Market lies in Kembang Village, Nanggulan District, Kulon Progo Regency, Yogyakarta Province, Indonesia.
D. Access
To reach the market, any kind of transportation is possible. The road to the location is also good already. The public bus available is the route Yogyakarta-Kenteng. You start from the Giwangan Bus Station and end in the Kenteng Bus Station. From the Kenteng Bus Station, you can walk west barefoot about 300 meters. The bus’ fare is Rp 8,000.
E. Ticket
No admission ticket is applied in Kenteng Traditional Market but there is parking charge of Rp 1,000 for motorcycle and Rp 2,000 for car.
F. Accommodations and Other Facilities
Kenteng Traditional Market provides several facilities for the merchants and the visitors, such as stalls for the merchants and parking lot for the visitors. Around the place, there are lots of food stalls, a bus station, and other facilities.
