Bantul Regency, Special Province of Yogyakarta deserves the title of handicraft center regency. One of the handicraft centers in Bantul Regency is Manding Village Leather Handicraft Center. Handicrafts from Manding are made from leather of preserved cow hide which are surely the favorite of many people.

As can be found in Cibaduyut, Bandung and Tanggulangin, Sidoarjo, we can find many leather handicrafts shops along the street of Manding. Manding Village becomes the main destination for visitors looking for souvenirs made from leather. In this village, visitors can get jackets, bags, wallets, shoes, belts, etc.

The skill of Manding people in processing leather is an inheritance. The making of leather handicrafts was pioneered by three young men of Manding in 1947, namely Prapto Sudarmo, Ratno Suharjo, and Wardi Utomo. The three previously worked in a leather company in Yogyakarta downtown which produced clothes and horse saddles. The three decided to open their own business by producing bags, jackets, etc. Since its establishment until the 90s, Manding craftsmen are able to export their products to Spain. Nowadays, there are about a hundred of leather craftsmen in Manding.

Not only in the showrooms, the leather handicrafts are also sold in some areas of Jogja, and even other cities such as Jakarta, Solo, Semarang, and Bali. The handicrafts are also exported to Australia.
