A. Overview
Bantul cannot be separated from the sea and its complexities such as the sand. Bantul sea is very resourceful. Therefore, on September 1st 2000 Sand Dune Museum at Parangtritis, Bantul was inaugurated on the initiative of Dr. Suratman Worosuprojo, M.Sc., a teaching staff of the Faculty of Geography of Gadjah Mada University.
The name Sand Dune is given because Parangtritis area has a vast area of sand dune of the type Barchan which shapes like a crescent moon. This type is rare in Southeast Asia as well as a unique natural type of sand dune in tropical area.
The museum functions as a laboratory useful for scientific and recreative activities. In addition to knowledge, visitors can also witness the natural phenomenon of sand dune. The museum is equipped with several instrument and books on geospatial and geography. Among the museum’s collections are types of stones, minerals, herbarium, Laquer Feel, photographs, scale model, sands, corals, sea creatures, and CDs on the typology of Indonesian beaches.
B. Features
The museum is located near Parangtritis Beach. Thus tourists can not only visit the museum but also enjoy the beach, see the sand dune natural phenomenon, while at the same time enrich the knowledge in the museum.
C. Location
Sand Dune Museum is located west of Parangtritis and Parangkusumo Beaches, Bantul, Special Province of Yogyakarta.
D. Access
To get to Sand Dune Museum is very easy either by private or public transports. If you choose to take a public transportation, take a bus from Giwangan Bus Station heading for Parangtritis and get off at the last bus stop. After that walk along the sandy beach to the museum.
E. Ticket
The entrance ticket to the museum is Rp 3,000. Always remember to keep the place clean and not to litter.
F. Accommodations and Other Facilities
Some supporting facilities at Sand Dune Museum are the wide parking area and well-kept convenience.
