A. Overview
The lives of kings in the past were indeed exotic and passionate. This is the least thing we can interpret from the existence of Balekambang Park in Surakarta, which is a heritage of Keraton Mangkinegaran. “Balekambang” is a Javanese phrase which means “a house on water surface”. Balekambang is a pavilion for the past kings which has or is surrounded by ponds. It is almost like Yogyakarta’s Pasanggrahan Ambarrukmo.
Balekambang Park has become a public space. Nowadays, the Unit of Technical Executive of Cultural and Tourism Agency of Surakarta is in charge of the park. The agency built special areas around the park for people to do outbound activities with one hall that can be used for puppet show or wedding party.
Inside the park, you can see old pictures of Surakarta Kings. There are some deer and visitors are allowed to play around with them. There are benches and fountains in the park for those who come for a rest and refreshment. Sometimes, this park is used for musical show.
