A. Overview

Traditional markets are spaces for both economical and cultural activities for people trade and at the same time culturally interact with others in it. People who visit a market do not only get their economical needs, but also knowledge about how people communicate, intermingle, and deal with life (practicing culture).

In Central Java, one of the most interesting traditional markets is Tawangmangu Market in Karanganyar. The market is like others traditional markets, selling various needs, snacks, fruits and vegetables, and clothes, except that it is relatively clean. Especially you who would like to have some fresh fruits and vegetables, this market is highly recommended.

The market’s location, which is not far from the infamous Tawangmangu waterfall and Mount Lawu, makes it very busy. Local people and tourists crowd the market everyday. For mount climbers, this market is where they get some supplies before having a go at Mount Lawu.

B. Features

Tawangmangu Market has a distinctive feature, i.e. it specializes in fresh fruits and vegetables, which are taken straight from the peasants of the slope of Mount Lawu. The carrots, mustard greens, cabbages, and potatoes will look very fresh and still have a slight soil smell. This is of course very appealing for vegetarians.
