A. Overview

In 1967, Hindu Dharma belief grew at Banguntapan Subdistrict. During 1967 – 1969 Sudiwadani ritual was regularly held so that there was a rapid growth of Hindu Darma adherents from 101 families to 550 people. It was in 1967 also that the Hindu Dharma Council of Banguntapan District, Bantul, established.

In 1975, Hindu Dharma adherents at Banguntapan Subdistrict commenced the establishment of a temple, Padmasana (a stone throne for the sun god Surya), and place of worship. On January 1976, Association of Indonesia Hindu Dharma (PHDI) of Banguntapan District proposed the permission for the use of the communal land of 720 m2 for temple. On May 25 1976, the Land-Use Right of the communal land for Klas V temple of 760 m2 was issued by the subdistrict office. On that land was then built Kori Building and the right and left fences. From February to June 1982 split gate and the front penyengker wall were built. There they go the Central Temple/ Jagat Natha called Jagatnatha Banguntopo Temple of Yogyakarta.

Jagatnatha Temple is always the main destination for Hindu People in Yogyakarta for prayer service. Most people who pray in the temple are newcomers who are mostly university students studying in Yogyakarta. Long time ago, the temple was the abode of Hamengku Buwono II who was later entitled Ki Banguntapan, who was also believed to be one of the reincarnations of Sabdopalon.

Jagatnatha Temple of Banguntapan has several people appointed to manage the temple called Penyungsung. Penyungsung volunteer as their devotion to God.They are selected by the congregation based on certain criteria. Jagatnatha community themselves consist of Banguntapan people and “the north cluster” who are the people coming from Bali living in Yogyakarta.

B. Features

Jagatnatha Temple of Banguntapan has a distinguished feature in which in the middle part there is an edifice with roof to protect people from heat and rain. However, when performing prayer service, the congregation unify with the nature, no pad, no seat.

Currently, Jagatnatha Temple of Banguntapan has two priests who actively lead the prayer service. Being a priest is not based on the congregation selection, it is based on the divine call.

Jagatnatha Temple has a large number of congregation considering that there are many Balinese origins living at the surrounding of the temple. Some of these Balinese people are university students, and some of them have been staying in Plumbon (Banguntapan) for quiet a period.

C. Location

Jagatnatha Temple of Banguntapan is located at Pura Street No 370, Plumbon Village, Banguntapan District, Bantul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta.

D. Access

Visitors who want to visit Jagatnatha Temple are suggested to take their private vehicle. From Yogyakarta City Hall take the road northward and turn east at the crossroad. Go straight eastward, after passing a bridge turn left to Pura Street of Plumbon Village.

E.  Ticket

Visiting Jagatnatha Temple is free of charge. For Hindu visitors, you can pray at the temple and join some of the religious activities held. You can also get the knowledge on the entire religious and spiritual activities by contacting the secretariate office at the front part of the Temple.

F. Accommodations and Other Facilities

Jagatnatha Temple has several supporting facilities such as convenience, buffet for children every Sunday, and meeting room for religious purpose.
