A. Overview
Parangtritis Beach in Bantul Regency (DIY) has a distinguished bathing place believed to have a healing power for the body and skin. The bathing place is called Parang Wedang, a hot spring. It contains many kinds of mineral substances such as Na, Cl, and Mg. What is unique is that it does not contain sulphur like that of other hot springs in general.
Parang Wedang emerged due to plate joint which resulted in hot spring. The hot water of the spring has a high contentration of chemical due to the fault and ground water coming from the mountain on the east part, flowing down through the fault and gains the earth’s heat.
The existence of Parang Wedang cannot rule out the history of Keraton Mataram Ngayogyakarta. It is believed that the hot spring existed due to the divine power of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VI when he was on his way to Pesanggrahan Balekencur. Sri Sultan HB VI intended to bath at one of the bathing places in the resting place (pesanggrahan). The water was too cold and he searched for hot water. It was a long search before he arrived at Mancingan Village where he made a hole in the ground. With his divine power, water sprang out hot and swift, later known as Parang Wedang Bathing Place.
The bathing place was then used by the royal family. After it was rarely used, it was opened for public. The name Parang Wedang itself derived from the word parang which in Javanese language means coral, and wedang which means hot water. The hot water keeps coming out from Parang Wedang until today.
B. Features
The warm water of Parang Wedang which comes from the hill area north of Parangtritis Beach is believed to have the virtue to cure several skin diseases such as pruritis, ringworm, and scabies. Bathing in it for several minutes will also heal weariness and stiffness.
Some other illnesses that are believed to be able to be cured by the warm water of Parang Wedang are rheumatism and stroke. For rheumatism and stroke therapy, someone is suggested to bathe in Parang Wedang everyday for a month. While for skin diseases, an everyday therapy for a week is enough.
The hot spring has three water sources of 10 meter deep and the shape of the pond at Parang Wedang is so representative that it keeps the clearness of the water. Parang Wedang hot spring opens from 6.00 to 18.00 West Indonesian Standard Time, however, if the visitors are too crowded then it closes at 15.00 WIST due to the limited hot water supply.
C. Location
Visiting Parangtritis Beach is incomplete without spending some time at Parang Wedang bathing place, Bantul, Special Region of Yogyakarta. It is located a few meters from Parangtritis entrance. Parang Wedang bathing place is about 30 km from Yogyakarta downtown, and is accessible in an hour.
D. Access
Visiting Parang Wedang by private vehicle is preferable because the raod heading the location is in good condition and relatively smooth. Take the road to toward Parangtritis Beach for an hour, after passing Parangtritis Retribution Post, a few meters ahead you will be there at Parang Wedang.
E. Ticket
At Parangtritis Retribution Post, visitors are charged Rp 3,000 per person for the entrance ticket. The retribution fee for car is Rp 2,000 and Rp 1,000 for motorcycle (August 2010).
There are some additional fee for parking; Rp 2,000 for motorcycle and Rp 5,000 for car. Meanwhile, for bathing visitors are charged only Rp 4,000 and they can enjoy bathing for unlimited time.
F. Accommodations and Facilities
Parang Wedang Bathing Place is a mineral-containing hot spring of 1140 m2. Some supporting facilities in this place are the 9 m x 8 m hot water saving, six hot water bathrooms, and six frreshwater bathrooms. There are also inns, recreational spots and restaurants located nearby.
