A. Overview

Perhaps only few people know that the fence of the government office of Pengasih District, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, is historical. The office is in part related to the origin of Kulon Progo Regency. It occupies the former building of the capital of Kulon Progo, i.e. before it was merged with Adikarta Regency. After the unification, the capital was moved to Wates. The fence surrounds the space and makes border with people’s regency. The original building is no longer there, only the fence wall is well preserved.

The fence is one of the Dutch remnants. In about the time of Dutch Aggression II, in 1948, the first village head of Pengasih defended the complex when the Dutch had ruined most buildings around it.

The fence is 40 cm thick and was built of river stones and bricks combined. There is a semar-tinandu shaped gapura (gate) at the entrance. The height of the westside fence is 150 cm and of the eastside is 200 cm.

B. Features

It has been many times that the government planned to destroy the fence for a road widening project that connected Sentolo-Sermo. It caused disputes until finally people understand that the fence is a historically valuable and that they should preserve the complex.

People now see the fence and gate as the remnants of the old Kulon Progo. The complex does look like nothing special for those who do not know, but for Kulon Progo people, it is a precious remnant of the past that they must protect and preserve.

C. Location

Pengasih Fence is situated in the complex of Pengasih District Government Office, on Purbo Winoto Street 06, Pengasih, Kulon Progo.

D. Access

Using private transportation, you can get to the place from Wates and go northwards. It is about 2.5 km from Wates downtown and 2 km from Wates Square. Taking public transportation, you may start from Giwangan Bus Station by mini bus heading for Wates. The bus will cost Rp 6,000 and you can stop right in front of the site.

E. Ticket

There is no admission charge whatsoever in this place. You can just come and see the historical Pengasih fence yourself.

F. Accommodations and Other Facilities

The fence is historical, yet not specially designed as tourism object. Besides the fence, there is the office of Pengasih District Government with an adequate parking lot.
