A. Overview
Most markets in Indonesia are run by the local government, but not Gemah Ripah Market. The market is entirely run by the grocers themselves. Gemah Ripah Market, more popular as Fruit and Vegetable Central Market of Gamping (or Gamping Central Market), occupies 1.5 acres of land and was established in 1995, providing mostly fruits and greens. The grocers, over 168 of them, are affiliated in Gemah Ripah Cooperation.
Previously in early 1990s, this market was at Shopping Center in Yogyakarta downtown. Then, since the area was about to be used for green open space, in 1995, the fruit and green grocers were moved to Pelem Gurih area. However, not all of them moved there, there were some who stayed at Shopping Center area (now Taman Pintar).
The grocers at Gemah Ripah Market are among those who were moved to Pelem Gurih. Three months after the movement, their turnover was decreasing. They finally initiated to move to Gamping. They bought the land from the local people on their own expense. After seven years of installment, the land was finally theirs. Gemah Ripah Market is an autonomous market because the local government does not involve on the management. The market is run based on the agreement among sellers. Under the umbrella of the cooperation, all kind of transaction must be through the cooperation first.
Gamping Central Market’s layout was determined by the agreement of the grocers. To facilitate loading and discharging process, the market is divided into 6 blocks. There are as many as 139 kiosks, 4 x 9 meters each.
Gamping Central Market is also known as a transitional market. The fruits transit at the market to be then sorted and classified based on their quality. Grocers who have the duty to do the sorting get commission.
The incoming and outgoing trucks off the harvesting season are around 70, but during harvesting season they reach 75 – 150. Every truck must queue in order to make the loading and discharging process run well. Porters doing the loading and discharging are paid Rp 60,000 per truck he serves.
Many other markets have underwent several changes in term of management, aiming at creating a more comfort when people do their shopping. Also, it is hoped that by presenting comfortable traditional market people will be encouraged to going to traditional market instead of modern ones.
B. Features
The fruits that go to Gamping Central Market are local fruits. But there are few imported ones. There are 4 kiosks that specially deal with imported fruits. Among the local fruits are apple, avocado, orange, melon, pineapple, mango, banana, salak, and watermelon.
