A. Overview
Kaliurang is an area in the north part of Yogyakarta, at the slope of Mount Merapi and popular as a rest area and tourism resort. There are many choices of activities to spend your holiday here. There are the watch tower and Merapi observation post, Ullen Sentalu Museum, Merapi Volcano Museum, Kaliurang Guest House, Jepang Cave, Children Play Ground and Tlogo Putri. The latter, located at the foot of Plawangan Turgo Hill, is one of the most-visited spot in Kaliurang.
Tlogo Putri is a combination of water tourism and natural tourism managed by Sleman Tourism Administration. In Javanese language, tlogo means lake. But never imagine that you will find a large lake like Sarangan Lake at the slope of Mount Lawu. The lake in Tlogo Putri refers to a dam with rented canoe and water ride. There are other rides namely ferris wheel, flying fox, swing, seesaw and some other rides.
Although it is only a dam, it is a worth-visiting object. It is included in Plawangan Turgo Hill managed by Perhutani (State Owned Forest Enterprise), having refreshing atmosphere given that it is located at the slope of Mount Merapi and borders with the dense forest owned by Perhutani.
Tlogo Putri is visited by everyone of all ages, children, adult and elder. The various rides will add to the enjoyment of the family vacation. If you like tracking you can walk into the forest, tracing the path that will lead you to Kaliadem or Kalikuning, even to Tlogo Muncar Waterfall or Watu Kemloso.
B. Features
Cool, quiet, refreshing and cozy. That is more or less how it feels in Tlogo Putri. Although the dam is not too large, it still looks pretty. The background view of Tlogo Putri are Plawangan Turgo Hill, the dense forest, the crowd paddling canoes and water rides. This view reminds us to the hill view in European countries. Toward afternoon, fog goes down covering tips of trees on the hill and forest, thus making the atmosphere more enjoyable and exotic and at the same time thrilling.
There are many activies you can do while you are at Tlogo Putri. You can walk around the dam to enjoy the fresh air and relieve your stress; or else take the canoe or other water rides; try flying fox, seesaw, swing, ferris wheel; or just taking pictures. There are monkeys living around Tlogo Putri, and they often show up to tourists. They are friendly to tourists if tourists treat them well.
If you like night walk, go deeper to the forest. Climb the ascending footpath up to its top where you can see the scenic view of Mount Merapi. Another option would be Tlogo Muncar Waterfall in the forest. However, when dry season comes, the water discharge of the waterfall is very low and sometimes it is completely dry. Walking in the middle of the virgin forest will be a new experience for you. And if you get lucky, you will get a chance to see Java eagles flying among the trees.
Every Sunday or in every holiday, there are art performances at Tlogo Putri area. Among the performances are jathilan (horse dance), campursari music, kubro siswo, topeng ireng, malay orchestra, and dangdut. The good thing is that tourists do not have to pay additional fee to watch them.
C. Location
Tlogo Putri natural tourism resort is located in Kaliurang tourism destination; administratively, in Hargobinangun Village, Pakem District, Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta.
D. Access
Located at Kaliurang tourism area which is one of the most favorite tourism destinations in Yogyakarta makes Tlogo Putri very accessible. If you take your private vehicle you can take Kaliurang Street and you will arrive at Tlogo Putri in less than an hour. But if you choose to take a public transportation, you must take a Jogja – Kaliurang bus which will take you straight to Tlogo Putri.
E. Ticket
The entrance ticket to Tlogo Putri is Rp 2,000 (August 2010). Plus, when entering Kaliurang area visitors must pay the admission fee as much as Rp 2,000 for adult and Rp 1,000 for children. Private vehicles are also charged with parking fee; Rp 500 for motorcycle, Rp 2,000 for cars and Rp 3,000 for bus and truck.
F. Accommodations and Facilities
Some facilities visitors can enjoy at Tlogo Putri are the swimming pool, kids playground (swing, seesaw, slide, ferris wheel), gazebo to take shelter, public toilet, and wide parking area. Once a week there is art performance like jathilan, topeng ireng, dangdut, malay orchestra, and band.
If tourists want to taste Kaliurang special food, such as jadah tempe, they can buy it at the food pedlars selling the food by carrying them on their back. They can also buy it at Warung Mbah Carik located not far from Tlogo Putri. Other cuisine sold around Tlogo Putri is the Rabbit Satay.
Tourists can easily find inns in Kaliurang, ranging from tens to hundreds of thousands of rate. If tourists wish to camp, they can have it at a camping ground near Tlogo Putri. One thing for sure, tourists do not need to worry about facilities and accommodations, because they are all available and accessible there.
