A. Overview
Duwet is a village resort offering natural beauty, culture, and local tradition as features. Here, visitors can take the package tour to learn about and practice agriculture, art, and the people tradition. Therefore, it is recommended that you consider this village for your holiday vacation.
The origin of the village is related to the struggle of Pangeran Diponegoro of Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Sultanate when he was fighting the Dutch in a war famously known as the War of Java (c. 1825-1830). Duwet was founded by some of Pangeran Diponegoro’s soldiers who ran to the east (Klaten area).
Duwet has been successfully developed to become a tourism village in Klaten Regency, Central Java Province. This is understandable for Duwet has basically had natural and cultural resources required to make a tour package. Moreover, the people are generally skillful, not only as peasants but also as artists. A few of the total 2.027 residents (2006) are adept art performers, from kethoprak (traditional play) to karawitan (traditional musical performance),
The village is 94.18 acres wide. It borders with Gatak Village in the east, Karang Lo in the south, Dernals Ijo in the west, and Mranggen in the north. Most of its spaces are used for rice farms and some of them are for other plants.
B. Features
Duwet Village is special for its natural beauty, culture (customs and tradition), and art. The scenic landscape of the village makes it possible to make a package tour of trekking or agricultural activities.
The culture in the forms of custom and tradition which has taken root since over a century ago is wrapped as an appealing package. Traditions such as merti desa (village cleaning) is carried out every 1 Muharram or 10 Dzu al-Hidjah; sambatan or cooperative work is done by the people for instance, when there is a house gets broken; the tradition of kumbakarnan or mass banquet is done when making a committee of a special event; while sadranan (a traditional ceremony before entering Ramadan), saparan (a traditional ceremony conducted in Safar month and characterized by people making rice-flour cakes), and wiwitan (a ritual conducted before planting rice) are also performed regularly.
Duwet Village also has campursari groups and puppetry group. There are 3 campursari (a kind of traditional music) groups in Duwet, namely Tombo Ati, Adventura Nada, and Abilowo. The village was also known to have an elderly and puppet maestro famous in Surakarta and nearby areas. He was Ki Wiro Warseno. He was the master of the infamous puppeteer Ki Narto Sabdo. It is the children of Ki Wiro Warseno who continue their father’s work by preserving the puppetry group in Duwet. One of Ki Wiro Warseno’s sons, Kesdik Kasdolamono, has even been considered a master puppeteer in Surakarta. Aside from performing puppet show, Kesdik is also known as a visiting lecturer in the Art Institute of Indonesia (ISI) Surakarta.
C. Location
Duwet Village Resort is situated in the hamlet of Soran, Duwet Village, Ngawen District, Klaten Regency, Central Java Province.
D. Access
The village is accessible by public and private transportation. Taking public transportation, you can start from Giwangan Bus Station in Yogyakarta and take a bus heading for Klaten. You should then get off at Klaten Bus Station and change with minibus for Ngawen District.
E. Ticket
Visitors will get charged differently, depending on the package they take. The package contains activities distinguished as cultural (watching and learning about kethoprak [traditional play], gejok lesung, and karawitan [traditional music]), agricultural (watching and learning how to cultivate rice, tobacco, and sugarcane), historical (visiting Merak Temple and Pluneng Pool), and industrial (watching and learning about home industry such as making bricks, bamboo handicraft, or leather puppet). All of these cost certain amount of money, starting from US$1.5 to US$3.
F. Accommodations and Facilities
Duwet Village Resort provides many facilities to ensure your comfort during your visit. There are guesthouses rented at US$15 (one-day visit), US$27 (two-day), and US$35 (three-day). The tariff includes transportation from Adisutjipto Airport, breakfast, and also the guesthouse.
There are tour packages offered by the village, such as Soran Alternative Education Camp-SAE Camp) that includes many activities like Anak Pelangi Program for kindergarten and elementary school students, Cahaya Bintang Program for highschool students, and Matahari Terbit Program for university students and public.
Souvenirs like bamboo handicraft, duster, and leather puppets are available here for the people themselves are the makers. And finally, it is suggested that before leaving, you should try the special food of Duwet, rengginang ketela (crackers made of cassava), or get some of it for people back home.
