A. Overview

Merapi Farma Herbal is a shopping tourism destination taking part in preserving the country’s cultural richness by developing traditional herbs and traditional medicine. Merapi Farma Herbal is a garden with more than 200 kinds of herbs. People may enter the garden to observe the herbs by themselves and at the same time learn about their benefit.

The use of traditional medicine by making use of herbs is incresing day by day. This becomes one of the answers to solve the social problem in meeting the need of health. Traditional medicines are cheaper, accessible, and have minor side effect. Moreover, there is a tendency where people begin to go back to nature by, for example, encouraging themselves to use traditional medicines, considering the side effect of chemical medicines.

The herbs in the garden are planted in pots and well-arranged and each is labeled so it is easy for visitors to recognize their names. Each plant is also attached with the information on the part of the plant which is taken for medicine. However, not all plants in the garden can be made into medicine, there are some which are only useful as unguent, such as nim tree (Melia azedarach L) which functions as natural pesticide for other plants.

Walking along the herbal garden as vast as 5,000 meter square will not exhaust you because Merapi Farma Herbal is located at the foot of Mount Merapi, so the air is cool, fresh and so natural. Visiting Merapi Farma Herbal is so refreshing and at the same time educative.

If you are interested to know more about the herbs and their usage, Merapi Farma Herbal provides a training package once every two or three months. Everybody from all ages, genres and any educational background can join the training. The training covers introduction to herbs, their usage and special quality; learning the process of compounding the ingredients. The training aims at giving new knowledge on herbs as well as a movement to go back to nature for medication.

Traditional medicine can be obtained in herbal industries or by making them by yourselves. However, to compound traditional medicine you need a special skill and much experience. Thus, introduction to kinds of herbs and the usages is needed. This action is in accordance with the mission of developing and speading the knowledge about herbs and traditional medicine and their usage to the people as well as about the biological richness of Indonesia.

At traditional medicine outlets, you can have a taste on boiled traditional medicine compounded from various herbs in form of crude drugs, processed hygienically to get quality product. The available boiled traditional medicine are around 19 kinds for particular diseases and health problems. Not only does it produce boiled traditional medicine, herbal companies also have medicinal plants breeding and cultivation located inside the tourism area. The medicinal plants of this garden are the ones used as the main ingredients for making the traditional medicine. They are also planted in polybags of various sizes to make it easy for visitors to take them home for collections.

At Merapi Farma Herbal shop there are many kinds of boiled traditional medicine having the virtue of curing different illnesses. Although boiled traditional medicine tastes a bit bitterer than instant traditional medicine, it gives more freshness to our body. The bitter can be omitted with brown sugar drink served to accompany the boiled traditional medicine. Some of the traditional medicines available are for: women’s health, men’s health, uric acid, cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stiff and sore, rheumatism, cold, and fitness. There are also other health drink such as: ginger, instant ginger tea, special ginger, kunyit asam, white turmeric, galingale, curcuma, betel, and tribulus. Also available are snacks like cashew nut, salak chips, mushroom chips, and jackfruit chips.

C. Location

Merapi Farma Herbal Yogyakarta is located at Kaliurang Street Km 21.5, Hargobinangun, Pakem, Sleman, Yogyakarta.

D. Access

If you want to visit Merapi Farma Herbal or buy traditional medicine or herbal drink there, you can take either private or public transportation heading for Kaliurang tourism resort. It is not difficult finding the location because it is right at the sidewalk and it has signpost to help you.

E. Price

Boiled traditional medicine at the Shop or Outlet ranges from Rp 5,000 to Rp 40,000 depending on the concoction.

F. Accommodations and Facilities

To support visitors convenience, there are several public facilities such as small mosque, and toilet. There is also a meeting room which can accommodate 80 people equipped with supporting audio-visual facilities. This room is available for meeting and training program.
