A. Overview
Natural Handicraft Marketplace, or Pusat Kerajinan Natural as the local call it, was founded in 1992 while the production of natural fiber handicrafts had been carried on years before with the jute sack making. As the jute sacks could not compete with plastic sacks, the then regent of Kulon Progo suggested that the natural fiber should be used to make more marketable art products instead of mere sacks.
The establishment of the Natural Handicraft Marketplace was big thanks to Mrs. Isti Rahayu, who inherited the skill of making handicrafts using fibers of plants such as pandanus, eceng gondok (water plant), agel, and gajih from her parents. She then called for her neighbors participation in developing the handicraft production and received positive responses. Thus there was founded a community of natural handicraft makers.
In its early development, the handicrafts are sold in Malioboro and Beringharjo Market. Gaining good reception from the market, since 2006 the products began to be exported with the service of PT Suwastama Solo.
