Jogjatrip.com, Kulonprogo—Peanut fritter, shrimp fritter, soybean fritter or eel fritter may have been familiar to us. But have you ever tried ant-lion fritter?
For you who ever spent time visiting Glagah Beach at Kulonprogo may have seen or tried this snack. Ant-lion fritter may be not as popular as other special snacks of Glagah Beach. It is obvious from its name that this fritter is made mainly of ant-lion. Mbah Darmo (70), an ant-lion seller at Glagah Beach, said that she buys the ant-lions from fishermen at Glagah Beach. A kilogram of ant-lion costs Rp 6000,-. She has been selling them in the beach for quite a long time. Mbah Darmo makes the fritters by herself at home.
“The ant-lions come from Glagah Sea. I buy them Rp 6000,- per kilo from the fishermen,” said Mbah Darmo.
Some additional ingredients to make ant-lion fritter are rice flour, tapioca flour, coconut milk, garlic, candlenut, coriander, salt, greater galingale and citrus leaf. The citrus leaf serves to rid the fishy smell of the ant-lions. A plastic package of five pieces of ant-lion fritters costs Rp 5000,-. The combination of the ingredients results in piquant, crispy and delicious fritter, not to mention—according to Mbah Darmo—its special virtue to lower blood sugar.
Compared to other snacks in Glagah Beach, ant-lion fritter is not easy to find. Mbah Darmo is one of the few ant-lion fritter sellers. Curious about this snack? Find it at Glagah Beach, Kulonprogo. *** (Andreas Eko Wahyu S)
