Sosrowijayan to Hold Apem Festival to Attract More Tourists

Jogja, Jogjatrip.com ― Sosrowijayan area in Sosromenduran Subdistrict, Gedongtengen, Yogyakarta is in need of restructuring and imaging in order to become a tourism destination. The restructuring aims to attract more tourists to come to Yogyakarta and to stay in the hotels or inns at Sosrowijayan Street.

Sosrowijayan has many potentials to enhance tourist visit to Yogyakarta. The fact that this area is located near Pasar Kembang (an area known for its prostitution complex) gives a negative image to Sosrowijayan. According to a prominent figure of Sosromenduran Eddy Karyono, Sosrowijayan needs to be cleared of this bad negative image. Imaging is the fundamental aspect to realize the target of making Sosrowijayan a tourism destination. Many art and young activities are often held here, such as jathilan, keroncong music, or other musical performances.

Eddy Karyono stated that one of the efforts to realize this aim is by holding the Apem Festival on Monday, August 8^th 2010 at 8 a.m WIST at Sosrowijayan area. The festival participated by 150 groups and individuals is an effort to empower the potentials of Sosromenduran Subdistrict.

“We have had a dialogue with the citizens, local government and stakeholders. Apem Festival will be an effort to establish a good image of Sosrowijayan area to further make it tourism destination which cannot rule out Malioboro,” Said Eddy Karyono to Jogjatrip.com at Sosromenduran Subdistrict, Wednesday (8/4).

The Apem Festival will be held through a mass apem making by groups and individuals which involve 54 RT/RW (neighborhood association/ citizens association) of Sosromenduran Subdistrict, 79 from Pringgondani Subdistrict, and the rest are the stakeholders. Over 15 groups and individuals will compete to make apem (rice flour cake) which will later be served in a kenduri (mass banquet) and some of them will be given to tourists visiting the event.**(Andreas Eko Wahyu S)
