Jogja, Jogjatrip.com-As Lebaran holidays and New Year are drawing near, the managing board of Malioboro continue to tidy up. They start to make some improvement on usual issues like bad smells, the abnormal high prices of food at the lesehan stalls, and bad service. The managing board, along with the businesspeople working in the Jogja’s icon, expect to bring back all the spirit and positive image Malioboro used to be famous for in the past.
One thing that they would do is holding a kind of workshop for the people. The workshop will be conducted in the competition format in which participants’ orderliness, cleanness, and politeness to visitors are taken notes.
According to Head of Yogyakarta Tourism and Cultural Agency Yulia Rustrianingsih, the participants will be divided into four categories. The first one is culinary service category, which includes Malioboro Lesehan Owner Association (PPLM), Handayani Food Peddler Association, and also Angkringan Owner Association of Danurejan Malioboro (PADMA). The second category is transportation, which invites about 60 registered Malioboro parkers to take part. And the last one is the category for souvenir sellers and art workers either painters or street musicians.
“The assessment is going to be done in secret. So we are assessing them without their noticing,” she explained in an interview with Jogjatrip.com in her office, Thursday (8/5).
Meanwhile, Head of Regional Board of Indonesian Tour Guide Association (DPP HPI) Andi Mudhi’uddin added that, all people who work in Malioboro should have a good understanding of what tourists really want, which supposedly includes comfort, safety, and good service.
“Tourists also have hopes for Malioboro to at least be comfortable and safe enough. On no account may the few bad images of Malioboro make them reluctant to make another visit to Jogja,” he said.
The Indonesian Tourist Guide Association also hope that Malioboro street musicians can be more organized and thoughtful in working. They should know when to play music before tourists and when they should let them on their own. And most of all, they are also urged to help present the artistic and cultural image of Yogyakarta through their performance. ** (Andreas Eko Wahyu S.)
