A Leader Must Hold Firm to Satya Wacana

A Leader Must Hold Firm to Satya Wacana

35th "Yogya Semesta" Dialogue
30 Agustus 2010

Jogja, Jogjatrip.com—When society is in need of a leader, then it is someone who really understands the social reality who deserves to carry out the leadership mandate. A leader must be able to bring his people toward prosperity. Referring to leadership in the context of Islamic and Javanese Sufi, a strong leader means having consistency of satya wacana which means the harmony in saying and implementing.

The above explanation arose in the 35th “Yogya Semesta” Cultural Dialogue and Art Performance bringing out the theme “The Sufi Meaning of Javanese and Islamic Leadership, Its Relevance to the Character of National Leadership”, Tuesday night (08/24/10) at Bangsal Kepatihan Yogyakarta. Attending the dialogue were resource persons Kuswaedi Syafi’ie, M.Ag (Sufi Poet and Professor of Islamic Mysticism at UII Yogyakarta), KH. Syarif Mashur Ridlo, SE (Head of “Sultan Agung” Muslim Boarding School at Sleman), Eva Imania Eliasa, MPd (Professor of Educational Psychology and Counselin of UNY), dan KH. Abdul Muhaimin (Coordinator of FPUB Yogyakarta) hosted by Hari Dendi (Yogyakarta cultural observer).

There are also public figures, academicians, artists, cultural researchers, university students, Islamic gathering communities all over Yogyakarta. Among them are Mahyudin Al Mudra, SH.MM (City Education Council of Yogyakarta), Yuhastina, MA (Maharatu Tour and Travel), Shaharu Layali Congregation, Sholawatan Madura Congregation, and more.

Before the dialogue started, the participants were presented with Salawat (a song to praise Prophet Muhammad) by Sholawat Residence, Syi’ir Panggiring Ati Prayer, and fashion show by Paras Ayu Collection. Some religious songs from popular mucisions were played to add up to the solemn atmosphere.

In the program hosted by KAW. Wibbie Maharddhika, Hari Dendi opened the dialogue by stating that the theme “The Sufi Meaning of Javanese and Islamic Leadership” always presents endless motions to discuss, because there are interesting segments to observe. One of them is the relationship between Javanism and Islamism which bear to several theories on the hand of the experts, moreover if it is examined with the characteristic of national leadership.

Responding to Hari Dendi’s explanation, first resource person Kuswaedi Syafi’ie stated that Islamic mysticism has a big role in determining the living direction and dynamic of Islam and Javanese people. “The presence of Islamic mysticism, although often causes controversy, is in fact has significant impact and deserves consideration in the effort of solving any social problems which develop along with the dinamic movement,” he said.

Meanwhile, KH. Syarif Mashur Ridlo and KH. Abdul Muhaimin agreed that if leadership is without virtue, then the vision and mission will be meaningless. “Leadership literature of the west emphasizes on the importance of every organization to build core values, then the values of Islamic and Javanese leadership which are implanted in a person since the beginning will make him an effective leader”, both explained.

Eva Imania Eliasa explained that a leader must cling to Hasta-Brata. Hasta means eight and Brata means steps, thus Hasta Brata means eight steps. A leader’s steps embrace eight characteristics of the natural objects namely the soil, fire, wind, water, universe, moon, sun, and star. **(Tasyriq Hifzhillah)
